Renegade Brass Band

image

We spoke to Andy from Renegade Brass Band, the 12-piece brassy hip-hop muthas from Steel  City

Hey, so how did you guys all first meet? And what made you want to start a band together? Introduce the band for us if you wouldn’t mind.

Ok, long story! A lot of the horns who started in the band - Nick and Christina (trombones) and Andy and James (trumpets), and alumni Tom (tenor sax), Tim (trombone) and Chris (trumpet) - knew each other through University music, and had discussed putting a brass band together for a while. I knew drummer Rory through the samba band we used to play in together, we met percussionist Dan at a salsa night, and Matt, our Sousa player, responded to a musicians ad online looking for a tuba player!

Since we began, we’ve added new members - after a few shows, we brought in Vex our MC, and former DJ Matt Von Badd - and brought in replacements for those who’ve moved on - our new trumpet player James, Jamie on tenor sax, and DJ Krook Kid on the wheels of steel. Amazingly with a 12-piece band, we’ve been able to keep a relatively stable line-up, but we have a few players we can call on in an emergency!

Walter Ego mix for British Council

Banging mix here from man like Walter Ego!

The mix comprises of all his own work with plenty of unreleased gems thrown in there. Walter Ego is raising the bar on electronic music and ain’t afraid to produce tracks that are a little different, not a bad thing in my opinion.
